Our Insistence On Quota System Is Causing Serious Problems For Our Education - Don
A
Professor of Guardian and Counseling, at the University of Lagos, Ngozi
Osarenren says the future of education is in a serious problem because
of our insistence on quota system.
The Don said this during her Keynote address at a summit organized recently by the Good News Baptist Church, Surulere to proffer solution to the sorry state of education in the country.
She also said the future of education lies in the hands of everyone, and should not be left alone with government,
She said, “The future of education in Nigeria is in our hands. In this country everybody claim to be expert in education and many of them don’t even know about government policy on education. The tertiary level is in a bad state because the basic education which is the feeder is in a bad state. Look, if you don’t get the basic right, the tertiary won’t okay” she said.
“there is dishonesty everywhere, Academic Staff Union of Universities, went on strike for some weeks and called it off on Tuesday and you won’t believe that none of have resumed. Dishonesty amongst ourselves, with government, parents. There is a big problem, not only government but parents also, how many of our parents bother to always check children in school. We should always learn to bond with our children. The future of our education is in our hands.
“A federal university in Nigeria, (UNILAG) pays N14000 as tuition fee for a year and with that we should ask how can we sustain our education system with that. Today in Nigeria, people have killed education for their benefit and parents say there is nothing God cannot do, stop saying that, we should always strive for what we all can do. We can’t talk about world class universities without doing something about our basic education. Let me tell you, we have more pupils in public schools and not as what people believe they we have more in the private.
“It is not like that, we need to look at the basic and work on it. We need to be begin to search our conscience and speak to ourselves about the mess in Nigeria and ask what we can do about it”.
“We have parent who engage in fraudulent practices, paying for children education, results and you should know that, what you are doing is showing and telling your child about how to get things done in the easy and crooked ways”.
“We have parent buying smart phones 200000 for children at age 18 and 16 and we believe that what we are doing is okay. We are talking about honesty. ASUU went on strike in 2009 and the same reason they still went on strike in 2017 and we are talking about development, when all this things is happening”.
“The quality of education remains what it is because we don’t have quality people in our education system. The future of education is in a serious problem because of our insistence in quota system. Quota system has really affected our education system. When we give concession for some to enter school, will they also be giving concessions to write examination?
She further schools in Ghana cant be compared to Nigeria, “We talk about schools in Ghana, do you know that lecturers in Ghanaian universities can’t be compared to the ones we have in Nigerian Universities and you still Nigerian parents struggling to send their children to study in Ghana, same with the private universities when the quality of education there can’t be compared to the ones we have in public universities”.
“How do we expect education to be better, when we don’t have teachers of deep content on subjects like Mathematics, physics and chemistry and we also have teachers who are not respected and I wonder how we expect our education to be better, when we all say it’s not our business and we expect things to be better”.
“The future of education in Nigeria is in all our hands, fathers especially, it is not about dropping money alone, you must partake in the education of your child. We all should know that people only measure you by your children and the cars or properties you have”.
Also Mrs Folasade Adefisayo, an Education consultant said the citizenry always need to demand for quality education from government.
According to her, “There is no way our education can rise beyond the quality of teachers, same way you can’t have a good quality tertiary education without the basic education being good. We are sitting on a keg of gunpowder with the amount of children we have out of school. We are living in an environment where the next generation is not being educated properly” she said.
“School is not about structure, but about the learning quality. We have many children that cannot read. I am of the opinion that if government say they want to educate children, they should their job and not be expecting people input. I am of the school of thought that government should be held accountable and responsible for what it says. If it say, it want to provide free education, let them do it accordingly”.
“If we should privatize education what will happen to the child of the cleaners, farmers and the mechanics, they also need education and we need to demand government provide quality education and we need to start asking for quality standard and not low standard, because public education is the most important as it is where the children of the masses and someone came to talk about the amount of child out of school and we are happy about it.
We are still teaching students on 19 century, while we are in 21 century and we expect things to be better”.
On the roles of mission in academic education in Nigeria, Mrs. Yemisi Subaru, said christian need to come together for the betterness of education
“The reason we are talking about failure is because the church has failed, before we had the church and government working hand in hand for education and everything was okay” she said.
“When the missionaries came, they built schools because they understood and know it important in evangelism in education and apart from that, it worked well during that time and I ask what has happened?
“The quick fix to future of education in Nigeria, the church has a large role to play. Government collected missionary schools from us and we sat down and said nothing about it. We have churches where they build structure that people will come into not more than four hours and to me, I think we need to turn those structures to educational use”.
I think it is time as Christians to go back to school, as it is a means for evangelism. Yes we blame government, but I believe we can put together a Christian curriculum for education, I know schools in Nigeria that don’t use the Nigeria education curriculum and I don’t think we need to wait for government, we need to speak to one another and say enough is enough. We spend money in expensive concert, we need to stop this and look at education at our end”
