Former Jigawa State Gorvernor, Sule Lamido, has condemned incumbent
Governor Mohammad Badaru Abubakar for disregarding court order on the
just-concluded local government election.
Lamido, who lamented the “total disregard for the rule of law and
rubbishing the authority of court”, wondered how a democratically
elected government would flagrantly defy a clear position of the
judiciary.
On Sunday, the Jigawa State Independent Electoral Commission (JISIEC)
declared as winners, APC chairmanship candidates in all the 27 Local Government Areas of the state that contested Saturday’s council polls.
A press statement signed by the Chairman of JISIEC, Alhaji Ahmed Sani, said the APC candidates won the elections ‘unopposed’.
Reacting, Lamido told newsmen in his country home, Bamaina in Birnin
Kudu Local Government Area, that Badaru had diminished the dignity of
the office of the governor and become a source of embarrassment to the
state.
“Once courts are rubbished, they lose what they have as authority. It
is a dangerous precedence for government to be involved in court
contempt,” he said.
In his remark, former gubernatorial candidate of the PDP in the
state, Malam Aminu Ringim, described the election as an illegal
exercise.
“As law-abiding citizens, we did not participate in the election because of the court order, so this is an illegal election.
“We are therefore waiting till September 20, the date the court has
set aside to hear the substantive case we filed before the it,” he
said.
