FG Threatens To Shut Lagos Section Of Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway

 

The Federal Government has warned that it may shut the Lagos section of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway if the growing safety and security problems along the road are not brought under control.

According to the government, motorists have been ignoring the 30km/h speed limit within construction areas, with some allegedly driving at speeds of up to 120km/h.

The concerns are not just about speeding. Authorities also raised issues including illegal parking and U-turns, commercial motorcycles and tricycles, hawking, vandalism and the theft of road infrastructure.

More than 100 okada riders were reportedly arrested within one week, while about 5km of clear-view fencing and manhole covers along roughly 18km of the highway have reportedly been removed or stolen.

The government has now given road users two weeks to improve compliance, warning that closure could follow if the situation does not improve.

For a road project this important and expensive, should the government temporarily shut the affected section to enforce safety?

Or should enforcement simply be increased without closing the road.
