Tinubu Should Not Be Blamed For US Military Strikes In Nigeria – Analyst, Jega
Mahmud Jega, a news analyst with Arise Television, has said President Bola Tinubu should not be blamed for the recent United States military strikes in the western part of the country.
Jega stated that the development is unlikely to have a major impact on the 2027 elections for now, unless the security situation deteriorates significantly in the coming weeks.
He made the remarks on Friday while speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show, where he analysed the implications of the US action and Nigeria’s response.
Jega noted that the Nigerian government had earlier pushed back against what it described as a misguided narrative from the administration of US President Donald Trump.
He recalled that the Presidency made it clear that while Nigeria is grappling with terrorism, banditry and widespread insecurity, the situation should not be misrepresented as an inter-religious war or a genocide against any religious group.
Jega added that the Tinubu administration acted appropriately by challenging the narrative and dispatching delegations to the United States for discussions, although details of those engagements remain confidential.
He said: “No, I don’t think many people will blame the Tinubu administration for what is happening now because President Donald Trump, when he first met the threats, it was clearly not in coordination with the Tinubu administration or the government of Nigeria. This is because the Nigerian presidency immediately pushed back and said, “”your understanding of the situation is not too correct. It is true we have a terrorism and banditry problem and serious insecurity problem in Nigeria, but it is not an inter religious war or a genocide against one religious community, as you are pushing.””
“So the Tinubu administration did very well in pushing back on the misguided narrative by the Trump administration. And then they sent all these delegations to the US to negotiate. Of course, those are confidential conversations. We don’t know exactly what was said or what was agreed, but probably we are beginning to see the result now.”
“So I don’t think anybody will say it is the fault of the Tinubu administration that they have brought the American bombs dropping in the country. I don’t think so. And for now, I don’t think it will have a serious effect on 2027 calculations, but we will see if the situation gets out of hand in the weeks.
“But everybody will be happy if the Americans and the other Western powers provide not only intelligence but also material help to assist Nigerian security agencies and government to fight terrorism and insecurity all over the country, that’s what we have been praying for for a very long time.”
