The Moment Prosecutor Awomolo Urges the Death Penalty for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu
This is the moment Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN) explicitly urged Justice James Omotosho to impose the death penalty on Mazi Nnamdi Kanu after he was convicted of all seven counts of terrorism.
During the court proceedings on Thursday, November 20, 2025, immediately following the conviction, Awomolo presented his submission, arguing that the court had no discretion in the matter.
The Senior Advocate, while addressing the court, stated:
“…the only sentence that your lordship will impose for counts 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6 is the death sentence. Because this court has the power to do so and, with respect, must do so. The language of the Act is clear, and the court is also applying it strictly without deviation.”
He further elaborated on his argument, stating:
The offenses Kanu was convicted of under the Terrorism Prevention Act carry a potential death sentence.
Over 75 security personnel and many other innocent Nigerians lost their lives due to the activities of Kanu, his group, and followers.
The maximum punishment would serve justice for the victims of his acts of terrorism, and Kanu had not shown any remorse or penitence during the trial.
The presiding judge, Justice Omotosho, has since stood down the proceedings to deliver the sentence, which was expected later that day.
