SEYCHELLES OPPOSITION LEADER WINS PRESIDENTIAL RUN-OFF
Opposition leader Patrick Herminie has won the presidential run-off with 52.7%, defeating incumbent Wavel Ramkalawan on 47.3%, according to the electoral commission. Ramkalawan conceded, and Herminie, now the country’s 6th president, promised to lower the cost of living, fix public services, and govern for all Seychellois.
A medical doctor and former head of the anti-drug agency, Herminie says tackling heroin addiction will be a top priority. His party, United Seychelles, also took 15 of 26 seats in last month’s parliamentary vote.
The campaign was dominated by anger over a 70-year lease of Assumption Island for a Qatar-backed luxury resort near the protected Aldabra Atoll. Herminie says he will cancel the deal and has accused Qatari entities of election interference.
