Human rights activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, on Thursday, met with detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, at the Federal High Court in Abuja, News360 Nigeria reports.

Sowore shared a video of the encounter on X (formerly Twitter), showing the moment he warmly hugged and greeted Kanu within the court premises.

“Finally, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and I met at the Federal High Court today. The man is powerful and unrelenting. We greeted and hugged and the bond is strong! #FreeNnamdiKanuNow,” Sowore wrote in the caption accompanying the post.

Earlier in the week, Sowore had led a protest in Abuja demanding Kanu’s release, alongside his lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, and Kanu’s brother, Prince Emmanuel. The protest was, however, dispersed by police, who arrested Ejimakor, Emmanuel, and others. They were subsequently arraigned before a magistrate court in Kuje and remanded in prison custody.

Meanwhile, Kanu has opted to personally conduct his defence before Justice James Omotosho’s court in his ongoing terrorism trial. This follows the decision of his lead counsel, Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), to withdraw from the case.

The IPOB leader has been in detention since 2021 after being rearrested in Kenya and extradited to Nigeria under controversial circumstances.

The touching courtroom reunion between Sowore and Kanu has stirred reactions online. Many are calling it a sign of unity; others, a political statement.
