Police arrest 12 suspected notorious armed robbers, one other in Calabar

The Cross River State Police Command has arrested one notorious street
light vandal and 12 gang armed robbery suspects, who were alleged to
have killed a Police inspector, Ebri Ogban in Calabar, the state
capital.

Disclosing this to DAILY POST in Calabar, the Commissioner of Police,
CP Mohammed Inuwa Hafiz, said the suspect, Edet Ekpenyong a security
man was arrested by a team of patrol men from the state housing field.

He said two solar light batteries were recovered from the suspect.

Consequently, on the gang of suspected armed robbers, the Commissioner
said, "The operatives of State Criminal, Intelligence and
Investigations Department (SCIID) had encountered with suspected
deadly gang of armed robbers who have been terrorizing Calabar
Metropolis and its environs.

"The team after a long period of fierce gun battle subdued the gang
and arrested thirteen of them. As a result, some sustained serious gun
short wounds. In the process, one Promise Bassey Effiom died while
being rushed to the Police Hospital.

The Commissioner alleged that the said gang was responsible for the
death of the Inspector Ebri Ogban, who was attached to Department of
Operations in September this year.

He listed the names of the suspects to include, Charles Bassey Okon
'm' 22 years, Bassey Asuquo Effiong 'm' 23 years, Mfon Effiong Akpan
'm' 33 years, Marvellous Jacob Essience 'm' 19 years

Others were Kufre Effiong Akpan 'm', Ernest Okon Effiong 'm' 25 years,
Gilbert Esoho Ekpo 'm' years, Moses Bassey Okon 'm' 18 years, Essien
Eba Jacob 'm' 17 years, Asim Miracle Eric 'm' 18 yrs and Victoria Effa
Esu 'f' 22 years.

Our correspondent reported that one Police AK 47 rifle with five
rounds of live ammunition snatched from the late Inspector, one
locally made pistol, three short locally made pistol, two long locally
made pistols, fourteen live cartridges, military Jack knife and a bag
containing charms were recovered from the suspects.
