Hoodlums suspected to be cultists have laid siege on residents of
Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State, keeping them
indoors.
A resident who gave his name as Charles Etim lamented that the
residents of Calabar South Local Government area close their doors as
early as 6pm.
He said, "This an area that people stay outside their residents,
drinking and eventually go home around 12am to 1pm.
"These hoodlums who brandish machetes and guns as well as other
dangerous weapons move in droves of 10-20, intimating residents from
streets to streets.
"On Thursday, these hoodlums raided my street along Ibesikpo Street,
Atamunu, Uwanse, Mayne Avenue, Ekpo Abasi, White House and other
streets in the Local Government Area, collecting hand bags from women,
men and extorting money and other valuables.
"These people (Suspected cultists) similarly, enter shops, restaurants
and other business centres, cart away property worth several hundreds
of thousands.
"They wear black, covered their faces and move in groups. They
brandish knives, guns and other dangerous weapons forcing people to
leave for their homes early"
It would be recalled that a renewed cult clash between Klans and
Vikings was alleged to have claimed five lives in Calabar South of
Cross River State.
The incident occurred on Tuesday night and early part of Wednesday
along Watt market by Bedwell street, Ekpo Abasi Street, Ibesikpo
Street, Atu Street, all in Calabar South area of the State.
An eyewitness who gave her as Justina Ekpo said two young men were
allegedly killed along a popular Watt market, each was murdered at
Ekpo Abasi Street, Ibesikpo and Atu Street.
She said the murder was a reprisal over what happened during the early
part of this month (June).
"As at Tuesday and early part of Wednesday morning, at least five
persons were violently killed by irate youths suspected to be members
of rivalry cult groups.
When DAILY POST contacted the Police Public Relations Officer, Ms
Irene Ugbo on phone on Wednesday, she confirmed the clash, saying it
was between Klans and Vikings.
She explained that only two young men were murdered and not five as alleged.
"Only two suspected cultist were killed, one at Watt Market and the
other along Atu Street," She stated.
