Abia Councillors move to suspend LG boss over alleged financial misappropriation.

Twelve out of the nineteen elected councillors in Ohafia Local Government have appended their signatures in support of a motion for the suspension of the council boss, Engineer John Eke.

The councilors hinged their decision on what they described as gross misconduct and other allegations levelled against the council boss.
Confirming the number of signatories to DAILY POST, sponsor of the motion and councillors representing Amiyi Umuokpuru ward, Sabastine Agbaeze, explained that the move was necessary to check the excesses of the council boss.

He said, “The chairman has been mismanaging the council’s funds without recourse to legislative approval.
“Twelve out of nineteen councillors have signed for his immediate suspension,” he said.
Other councillors, Chris Nkuma, representing Amugudu ward 2 and Ukoha Oke, representing Isiama ward also confirmed that there were issues of gross misconduct on the part of the local government boss that led to the motion for his suspension.

The legislators went further to note that the legislature’s position was in line with the Abia state bye laws, adding that the action was not aimed at witch-hunting the council chairman, Eke.
When contacted on Wednesday, the Ohafia Council boss, Engineer Eke told DAILY POST that the councillors lacked power to suspend him, stressing that the constitution vested such power to the Abia state House of Assembly to do so.
He said, “If there are some misgivings, the local government legislature should have given me a fair hearing.

“Again, it is only the House of Assembly that has the powers to suspend a chairman of a local government council”, he added.
