Attempt to confirm Zamfara REC nominee ​, Mahmud​ fail​s again​ in Senate

An attempt for reconsideration of Zamfara Resident Electoral Commissioner nominee, Mr. Ahmad Mahmud, Thursday failed for the second time in the Senate.
Speaking through order 127 of Senate rules, Senator Kabir Marafa representing Zamfara Central Senatorial district explained that the petition by the State governor, Alhaji Abdulaziz Yari against the nominee was political witch-hunting.

Marafa said, it would amount to injustice, if the Senate decided to step down Zamfara REC nominee based on the petition, adding that “Senators are not boys of the Governor Yari.”
“Mr. President, distinguished colleagues, I want to come under order 127 of Senate rules to state that there were requirements for which petitions raised must be met”
“I want to say categorically that the governor of Zamfara State wrote the petition, and the petition was not backed by affidavit and it should be ignored.”
“The nominee, Mr. Ahmad Mahmud was born in Anka, schooled in Zamfara, became Attorney-General of Zamfara State at a time, was Chairman Zamfara State Anti-Corruption Commission”, he added.

Marafa insisted that while the nominee was born and bred in Zamfara, Governor Abdulaziz Yari’s grandparents were not from Zamfara state.
He pleaded with the Senate President to sustain the Committee report which was earlier submitted.
Reacting the Senate President noted that taking such moves would be against the laid down procedures of the Senate.
Saraki insisted that the Committee should be allowed to study the petition and turn in report, assuring that justice would prevail in the matter.​
