Doctors strike: Cross Rivers govt says it can handle influx of patients from UCTH

As the strike action embarked upon by the National Association of Residents Doctors (NARD) continues, influx of patients into the General Hospital, Calabar has resulted to increase in activities of the Hospital.
DAILY POST reports that the facility is currently struggling to meet up with the increasing demand for medical care. Almost all the wards and other areas are fully occupied by patients that left UCTH to the hospital.

Our findings further revealed that personel, including doctors and other paramedical staff are putting in extra time and energy to meet up with the inflow.
National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) embarked on a nationwide strike on Monday and relatives of patients have moved their wards from the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) to General Hospital in Calabar and other private institution in the state for health services.
When contacted on the phone, the State Commissioner for Health, Dr Inyang Asibong lamented the strike, but said the State Health facility, the General Hospital was equal to the task to handle the influx, “We do have enough hands to meet up with the increasing numbers that came in from the UCTH.”
“Our doctors are working round the clocks to ensure that adequate health care services are rendered to every patient that comes to the Hospital. Nobody can go untended to; we have what it takes to render these services. Our workers are putting extra energy and resources to meet up with a view to rendering adequate health care services.”

Interestingly, when asked to comment on the strike action embarked upon by NARD, Dr Asibong declined comment saying, “I don’t want to comment on the strike because there are many issues there, we just hope that things work out well and all parties involved resolve amicably.”
In a message to her colleagues, Dr Asibong said, “dialogue, dialogue and dialogue, let everybody go to the round table and resolve the matter, and it will help us.”
