The Rivers State Branch of the Nigeria Medical Association has called
for the unconditional release of some of its members who were kidnapped
in different parts of the state.
The association particularly said the kidnap of Doctor Alex Akani of
the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital is one too many.
Recall that Doctor Alex Akani a consultant family physician was
abducted by unknown gunmen who stormed his resident at Rumuekini
community in Obio-Akpor Local Government Area last Friday night.
Briefing newsmen in Port Harcourt on the development, State Public
Relations Officer of NMA, Doctor Justice Ohaka also complained that
Doctor Bobmanuel Clark who was kidnapped on 23rd was yet to regain his
freedom.
Doctor Ohaka also recounted how one Doctor Obolomini was kidnapped
alongside his nurses in Degema as well as Doctor Florence Onua who was
shot dead around D-Line axis of Port Harcourt.
He said, “We provide essential services and we do not expect that we
should be victims of attacks from the people we provide these services
to. Worse still, the government and security operatives have refused to
come to our aid. ”
The spokesman of the Nigerian Medical Association in Rivers State
complained that the frequent attacks on medical practitioners by
criminals were having a negative impact on the efficiency of healthcare
delivery in the state.
