A total number of 19 awaiting trial inmates incarcerated in the
Ado-Ekiti Prisons were on Wednesday released by the Ekiti State Chief
Judge, Justice Ayodeji Daramola.
They breathed the air of freedom during the CJ’s visit to the prison
facility alongside other judges, magistrates and other officers of the
state judiciary.
Out of the 351 cases reviewed, two of them were released on bail,
three were set free because they had no case to answer, while fourteen
were released unconditionally.
In a chat with reporters after the five-hour exercise, Daramola said
those set free deserved the amnesty based on various circmstances they
found themselves.
He advocated a synergy between the Police and Office of the Director
of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to fast-track administration of criminal
justice and reduce prison congestion.
Daramola expressed worry with the increasing rate of violent crimes
in the form of murder, armed robbery, rape and defilement of minors,
expressing the readiness of the judiciary to dispense justice without
fear or favour.
The CJ noted that about 80 per cent of the crimes were perpetrated by people from neighbouring states.
He also commended the Police for their diligent investigation and charging of suspects to court.
Daramola praised the prisons authorities for improvement of facilities in the complex.
