The trial of suspected billionaire kidnapper, Chukwudumeme
Onwuamadike, also known as Evans, before a Special Offences Court in
Lagos was stalled on Wednesday.
Evans' trial could not continue as his new counsel, Nuel Brown, asked
the court for an adjournment to enable him properly study the case
file.
Brown was hired by Evans following the withdrawal of Olukoya
Ogungbeje, his former lead counsel.
Ogungbeje had on June 13 announced that he was withdrawing for
personal reasons, after alleging that there were threats to his life.
In the four counts before the court, Evans is standing trial alongside
Uche Amadi, Ogechi Uchechukwu, Okwuchukwu Nwachukwu, Chilaka Ifeanyi
and Victor Aduba.
They were charged with kidnapping and unlawful possession of firearms.
The defendants were also accused of kidnapping one Mr Sylvanus
Ahamonu, holding him hostage for at least nine weeks and collecting a
ransom of $420,000 from his family.
However, the prosecuting counsel, Adebayo Haroun, did not object to
the request for an adjournment.
Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo, therefore, adjourned the case till October 5
and 19, 2018, for the continuation of trial.
