Police in Calabar, the Cross River State capital have shot dead four
persons suspected to be armed robbers. One of the deceased was said to
have been released from prison barely two weeks ago, for allegedly
robbing an unidentified man and dispossessing him of some valuables.
The incident occurred Monday morning.
An eye witness who spoke with DAILY POST moments after police drove
away with the bodies of the criminals, said they (robbers) were pursued
from, “somewhere” where they had robbed a man and were intercepted
opposite Government Secondary School, Barracks road where there was an
exchange of gunfire.
“At about 12.30 pm, we heard gun shots only to discover that a Police
vehicle was pursuing some five persons who were driving in a sport
utility vehicle. The Police were shooting and the robbers were replying
but we later discover that the State Anti-Robbery Squad which pursued
them were better prepared”
“They killed four of the robbers, including one person who some
people said was just returned from prison, while one was arrested
alive,” the witness said. He said nobody knew where the robbers were
pursued from but that exchange of gunfire was fierce opposite the
school.”
When the robbers suspected that they were being overpowered, they
attempted to run away and this helped the police to gun them down.
“They have just been taken to the Police headquarters and we counted
four of them while one was still breathing as at the time they drove
away from here,” one Okon Etim who said he lived not too far from the
scene said.
When contacted the Spokesperson of the state Police command, ASP
Irene Ugbo confirmed the incident but said she could not give the number
of dead.
